Parkmore Electrical was appointed to design and manufacture a generator distribution board for Shamrock Renewables, supporting a critical backup power system for the facility.
This project required a high-capacity, synchronised generator solution capable of delivering reliable redundancy in the event of power outages, while also allowing for future expansion.
Project Overview
The system was developed in close collaboration with the electrical contractor and generator supplier, ensuring full integration across all elements of the power infrastructure.
The primary objective was to deliver a robust and flexible solution to:
-
Support multiple generator inputs
-
Provide reliable backup power to the main distribution board (MDB)
-
Allow for future system expansion as site demands increase
Switchgear Design & Specification
Parkmore Electrical designed and manufactured a generator distribution board to accommodate:
-
4 incomers served via 4No. 550kVA generators
-
Common busbar system
-
4000A withdrawable air circuit breaker (ACB) for load distribution
The system enables the generators to be synchronised and off-loaded efficiently through a centralised distribution point.
Power Resilience & System Architecture
The generator board was engineered to provide redundant supply to the MDB, ensuring continuity of power in the event of a mains failure.
Key features include:
-
Centralised busbar system for generator synchronisation
-
Controlled load transfer via 4000A withdrawable ACB
-
Seamless integration with site power infrastructure
The system has been future-proofed, allowing for the addition of further generators as the facility expands.
Control & Synchronisation
The full system is synchronised using ComAp control units, delivering:
-
Precise generator synchronisation and load sharing
-
Reliable automatic operation during power loss scenarios
-
Stable and efficient generator performance
All control systems were supplied and witness tested by the Consulting Engineer, ensuring compliance and operational integrity.
Engineering & Installation Features
-
Flexible copper busbar connections, designed to accommodate multiple cable terminations
-
Sliding connection arrangement allowing horizontal adjustment prior to final torqueing
-
Elsteel modular framework for robust and scalable construction
-
Siemens switchgear for proven performance and reliability
Safety & Reliability
-
Enhanced safety through the integration of a Firetrace fire suppression system
-
High-quality materials and components throughout
-
Designed for safe operation, maintenance, and long-term reliability
Project Outcome
-
Reliable backup power solution for critical operations
-
Fully synchronised multi-generator system
-
Scalable design supporting future expansion
-
Successful collaboration across all project stakeholders
-
Delivered to a high standard of quality, safety, and performance
